The Fayette County Colon Cancer Network has pledged $35,000 to Uniontown Hospital from the proceeds from Saturday's planned Celebrity Chef Cook-off.

The Celebrity Chef Cook-off has been a big fundraiser for colon cancer research. The event was started by chef and restaurant owner Joe Carei, a colon cancer survivor.

"We found 20 chefs this year and a couple of new chefs," Carei said. In the past, the event has drew crowds of more than 500. "And we have great food."

This year, Carei said a $35,000 donation will be given to the Uniontown Hospital for the purchase a colonoscope to be used for surgical and diagnostic purposes at the hospital where more than 2,500 colonoscopies are performed annually.

"On behalf of our medical staff and the patients we serve, we are deeply appreciative of this donation," said Paul Bacharach, president and CEO of Uniontown Hospital. "The hospital and FCCCN continue to promote early detection and treatment of colon cancer through a procedure called a colonoscopy."

The Fayette County Colon Cancer Network is a nonprofit group with the sole purpose to educate and advocate the importance of colon cancer screenings and awareness.

Carei said along with the advocacy, he is working on getting vouchers for people who cannot afford a colonoscopy procedure. He said there are still people who are not tested for the cancer that is very preventable but is also one of the deadliest cancers if not treated early.

"I had two friends who died of it last year," Carei said, who's also the vice president of the FCCCN.

Recently, the FCCCN launched its new website -- www.hopeyouscope.com.

"We try to spend every penny on colon cancer awareness," Carei said.

Screening for colorectal cancer is recommended for anyone 50 years of age and older.

The annual Celebrity Chef Cook-off will take place at 6 p.m. Saturday at Anthony's Lakeside Party Center.

Tickets are $35 and are still available by calling Caleigh's Restaurant at 724-437-4440, 724-437-9463 or 724-437-7665.
